The End of WSUS: Officially Deprecated

Microsoft has just confirmed the end of WSUS by officially declaring it deprecated. In this post, we will analyze what this change means and how it affects update management in our corporate infrastructure.

The End of WSUS

Can I Still Use WSUS in My Infrastructure?

Of course you can! Microsoft has explained that “deprecated” does not mean WSUS will disappear immediately, but rather that no further development investment will be made. This means that existing features will continue to operate normally for the next few years, but no new functionalities will be released, nor will its performance be optimized.

When Will WSUS Actually Come to an End?

Although Microsoft has not provided an exact date, based on the information published about deprecated features in Windows Server 2025, we can assume that WSUS will remain available until at least 2035. This is because Windows Server generally has a 10-year support lifecycle.

Why Deprecate WSUS Now?

As reflected in Windows Update telemetry, more and more devices are receiving Windows updates without using a WSUS server. For endpoints, we have more modern solutions such as Windows Update for Business. For servers, the solution would involve using Azure Update Manager, although it would incur a licensing cost for each server that is not in Azure or Azure Stack HCI.

And What About ConfigMgr?

The same article emphasizes that although the end of WSUS has been announced, this currently has no impact on the features and functionalities of ConfigMgr. Therefore, we have no reason to be concerned in the short or medium term.
